Washburn Island Camping
Waquoit Bay National Estuary

Join us for a great trip to Washburne Island, a 330 acre island nestled in Waquoit Bay National Estuary. Washburne Island has a fascinating  and somewhat mysterious history, and is a marvelous place to observe the unique natural history of this area.
We will meet at  The Eastern Mountain Sports Store Hyannis where we will meet our crew and pack our kayaks. After a meandering paddle down the narrow and picturesque Child’s River, we will angle into shallow and warm Waquoit Bay. After landing at our waterfront campsite on Washburne Island, we can relax and unwind in the soft sand and sea breezes. Then we can look for ospreys chirping overhead hunting menhaden hiding among the eelgrass beds, or relax with a good book in a hammock strung in the pines.
The following morning after a hearty home cooked breakfast, we will explore Washburne Island and look for remains of the WW 2 amphibious engineer activity.
Once we have repacked our gear into the kayaks, we will head back up river with the tide at a leisurely pace to land at the sandy beach we left from.
